Jay says Carol Kelly found the answer – it comes form Horace’s Ars Poetica – he reocommended a play be no shorter or longer than five acts.

Jay Halio researches my question!
Today during seminar, Jay made my month by reporting that he researched my question (did you get that? Jay researched my question) about where the five-act structure came from – and when it replaced Aristotle’s three-act structure (which actually played out as three connected one-acts in antiquity).

Greta ponders if this is the scholars' experience with our essays.

Scholar Lecture: Margeret Mauer on Pericles and Romance
Fantastic lecture by Margaret on genre, classification arguments (history, tragedy, comedy?). Asserts that Pericles is a comedy.

Shout Outs
The days here are so long and intense. Yet...
I am constantly amazed at how patient, good-humored, humble, and generous our entire TSI staff, drivers, interns, and faculty are. In addition to being brilliant, they are really goddamn good people. Great examples for us as teachers.
Here's to all of you.
And to my classmates -- the five minute presentations only confirmed how much collective smarty pantsness there is around here and how original (and beautifully twisted) all of your minds are. So here's to you as well.
Cheers,
Robert
